Saturday — Estrogen & Progesterone: Women’s Health Foundations

Estrogen and progesterone are two of the main female sex hormones, but they affect much more than reproduction. Together, they help regulate the menstrual cycle, support bone health, protect the heart, and influence mood and sleep.

Estrogen supports bone density, brain function, and cardiovascular health. Progesterone balances estrogen, supports pregnancy, and has a calming effect on the nervous system. When these hormones are out of balance — whether during cycles, perimenopause, or menopause — women may experience hot flashes, mood changes, irregular cycles, or sleep difficulties.

While some changes are natural with age, lifestyle habits can support balance:

  • Movement: Exercise improves hormone regulation and bone strength.
  • Nutrition: Whole foods, healthy fats, and adequate protein help maintain balance.
  • Stress and sleep: Both play a big role in how these hormones function.

Estrogen and progesterone are more than reproductive hormones — they’re central to women’s overall health, vitality, and long-term well-being.
