Thursday: How Stress Wrecks Your Gut

Ever get “butterflies” before a big event or lose your appetite when stressed? That’s your gut-brain connection at work. Stress doesn’t just mess with your head — it slows digestion, causes bloating, and can even alter your gut bacteria balance.

Chronic stress increases cortisol, which makes the gut more “leaky,” allowing inflammation to rise. It can trigger IBS symptoms, heartburn, or irregular bowel movements.

The fix isn’t eliminating all stress (impossible!) but teaching your body to switch out of fight-or-flight.
Try:

  • Box breathing: Inhale 4 sec, hold 4 sec, exhale 4 sec, hold 4 sec (repeat x4).
  • Post-meal walk: Just 5–10 minutes helps digestion and lowers stress.
  • Phone-free meals: Eat slowly and chew thoroughly — this signals your gut to relax and digest better.

Action Step: Practice box breathing before one meal today and notice if your digestion feels smoother.
