Thursday — Thyroid Hormones: Your Metabolism Managers

The thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped organ in your neck, produces hormones (mainly T3 and T4) that control how your body uses energy. They influence metabolism, body temperature, heart rate, and even brain function.

When thyroid hormones are balanced, your body efficiently burns fuel, maintains a healthy weight, and keeps energy steady. Too little thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism) can cause fatigue, weight gain, and feeling cold. Too much (hyperthyroidism) can lead to weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and anxiety.

While thyroid problems need medical diagnosis and treatment, lifestyle still plays a role in supporting healthy thyroid function:

  • Nutrient intake: Iodine, selenium, and zinc are important for hormone production.
  • Sleep and stress: Both affect how well your thyroid hormones work.
  • Regular movement: Exercise helps regulate metabolism and mood.

Your thyroid is like the thermostat of your body. Treat it well with good nutrition, stress management, and rest, and it will help keep your system running smoothly.
